Eberspaecher Group reports on hacker attack on its IT systems

The Eberspaecher Group was the victim of a targeted hacker attack on Sunday 24th October 2021. Parts of the automotive supplier’s IT infrastructure were affected. To protect customers, employees and suppliers, the company immediately shut down all its IT systems and cut the network connections, and started its emergency plan. Production at over 50 of its plants around the world has largely been brought back into normal operation.

Eberspächer IT monitoring systems registered suspicious activity on October 24th. In order to prevent the attack from spreading both within the company and externally, Eberspächer immediately switched off all networks and servers.

In the cyber attack, the perpetrators attacked servers around the world with the help of so-called ransomware and encrypted part of the data.

“We immediately started our emergency plan, contacted the authorities and reported the matter,” summarizes Martin Peters, managing partner of the Eberspächer Group. “The cooperation with the investigators is highly professional,” emphasizes Peters. In order not to endanger the ongoing investigation, no further details can be published.

Eberspächer works for almost all major vehicle manufacturers, both in the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors. The company also develops and supplies complete systems and components in series as well as tailor-made retrofit solutions for special vehicles and buses.

After the attack, the focus has been on supporting and ensuring delivery to customers from over 50 production plants worldwide.

“We are in close cooperation with our customers. Our teams have worked together excellently over the past few weeks, so that we have maintained our ability to deliver or regained it quickly, ”reports Peters.

Production and logistics are closely coordinated. Regardless of the cyber attack, the current inadequate availability of electronic components in the industry, especially semiconductors, affects the ability to deliver.

For Peters, this special situation shows the excellent solidarity among the employees: “I am impressed by the cooperation in our company, this culture makes a significant contribution to joint management.”

After a conscientious examination, the company is gradually putting its IT infrastructure back into operation. A forensics team checks which areas of the network were affected and cleans the data. Parts of the network and the structure are being rebuilt in parallel and even more securely, so that it can gradually be put into operation. It will take some time before all digital services are available again for all employees and partners.
